Fan Fiction: A Mem-Noir: Inspired by True Events Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Glen -- Surprisingly good! : I wasn't confident this would be a good read, so I bought the book as much for the novelty of a book by Brent Spiner as for the intrigue I felt when I read the book blurb. As it turned out, this was actually a good read ! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kristen Mack -- Best narration of any audiobook, ever. : Best narration of any audiobook, ever. I've heard Neverwhere read by Benedict Cumberbatch/Natalie Dormer/James McAvoy and Octopussy read by Tom Hiddleston, but this cast on Fan Fiction is still top spot for narration. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mr. Lucky -- Postcards from the Bridge : Much like another author who spent time in the galaxy far, far away... Brent Spiner is renown for his iconic portrayal of Lt. Data, the lovable android on "Star Trek: The Next Generation". In human form, Brent Spiner is a remarkably talented and resourceful hyphenate with a keen comic mind. That skill is put to great use in his wildly entertaining pseudo memoir called "Fan Fiction". Pirandello would be proud of the hall of mirrors Mr. Spiner has decided to walk us through, blending fact and fantasy along with rueful commentary which are all driven by a surprisingly compelling narratives. "If it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage" as the old saying goes. With "Fan Fiction" Brent Spiner proves to be adept both on the page and stage. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Steven Marise -- A Great Read for the Trek/Fiction Fan : What a phenomenal read! This book takes the best parts of both the character Data and the real Spiner and weaves a hilariously funny drama. Spiner is both humorous and excellent at crafting a story to keep you coming back for more. I finished this read in a single day. I couldn't put it down! Thank you Mr. Spiner for sharing this work. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Well that was weird : Years ago when I watched the Trekkies documentary, I was reassured by the fact that there were loads of people a good bit weirder than me and with less social skills. And terrified by some of them, like the Spinerfem lady. Seems like the basis for this book. I've considered asking the actors at cons about the weirdest, scariest fans they have met, but held off. Here is a good reason why. Read my friends, and be glad its not true. Or is it? ( Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Scott Wagner -- So much fun! : It's one of the best book noirs. Catches you from the very beginning. A lot of humor and a lot of drama. Mr. Spiner does know how to act, sing and - write. HIGHLY RECOMMENDING. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Patricia -- Fans of Star Trek will love this book : A a great story with a mixture of fiction and nonfiction. Brent Spiner has yet another Talent besides acting and singing. He's a great writer too! Hope he writes another one oh, I went through this book like a hot knife through butter ( Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from frankdozier -- Quite a silly little book : Rarely does a book live up to its title as this one does. This book has all the familiar trappings of fan fiction. It’s absolutely masturbatory. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021 )

Set in '91 during the height of the Next Generation run, Brent Spiner writes a truly entertaining fictional memoir about the life of a celebrity caught up in a fan's obsession. Letters, a pig penis (yep, I just wrote that!), and other messages are delivered to Spiner by a creepy admirer of the show and specifically... In FAN FICTION, he walks you through the sometimes laughable but more often chilling situation with a fan who took things dangerously too far. Throughout the novel, Spiner sprinkles in various stories and anecdotes that devoted fans will just eat up. One in particular involves the late Dr. Oliver Sacks... On the whole, this is more Who Framed Roger Rabbit than Raymond Chandler, so if you're coming for some straight dark noir with the "inspired by true events" memoir shading, you've got another thing coming. But if you like a good mash up and want some deftly-written Real Person Fic, this is the book... Brent Spiner, known to fans as Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation (and in four movies, and on season 1 of Star Trek: Picard), has written a novel that blends fact, fiction, and a fun detective story into a story that is, whether you're there for the Trekkish moments or the whodunit, a page-turner. Fan Fiction is a zany love letter to a world in which we all participate, the phenomenon of "Fandom." Praise for this book Overall, this piece of meta-fiction is a solid entry into the contemporary noir oeuvre and a fast (it took me three hours), enjoyable read.
